'Accolade' is one of the first cherry trees to come into flower. It has pale, semi-double pink flowers usually appearing in mid-late March.
Trees provide more benefits the older and larger they are.
Ornamental Japanese Cherries are often small, spreading trees. There are lots of different cultivars with very different growth habits and flower types. These can range in colour from white to deep pink, and can be single, semi-double or double. All have smooth bark with distinctive lenticels, horizontal marks on the trunk.
'Kanzan' is a small - medium sized, spreading cherry tree. The best time to identify it is during April when it produces masses of big, double pink flowers. Bronze coloured leaves appear at the same time as the flowers.

Tall and slender Italian Alders (Alnus cordata) come into their own in December as they are one of the few deciduous trees to keep their leaves right through the month. They’re still green too, and won't entirely disappear until the striking male catkins appear in February.
You can recognise an Italian Alder by its heart-shaped, or cordate, leaves, and by the small seed-bearing ‘cones’ that you may find scattering the ground around it. But don’t be fooled, this tree is no conifer!
